Westport is often described as the town with the most river and oceanfront in Connecticut. The Saugatuck River runs through the middle of it and empties into Long Island Sound, and the town has three beaches along its shoreline: Compo Beach, Old Mill and Burying Hill.
That much water frontage means salt exposure reaches a large share of the housing rather than a thin strip of it. Saugatuck Shores is the extreme case, roughly 105 homes set among canals and lagoons with water on nearly every side. Compo Beach is the other pattern: what began as seasonal bungalows is now year round housing, with older cottages steadily replaced by larger shingle style builds.
Shingle and painted wood in marine air is the surface that most rewards soft washing and least tolerates pressure. Inland, through Coleytown, Long Lots and Old Hill, the exposure drops and the work shifts toward shaded roofs and gutters under mature trees.
