Guilford was founded in 1639 and its historic town center covers around four square miles, running from Interstate 95 south to Long Island Sound, with the West River on one side and East Creek on the other. Both edges are still lined with salt marsh, so the center sits back from the Sound across a broad band of marsh rather than directly on sand.
The town green was laid out in 1639 and its shape is essentially unchanged. Around it Guilford holds what the town describes as the third largest collection of historic homes in New England, with dwellings from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the Henry Whitfield House of 1639 is the oldest stone house in New England.
